West London Mental Health NHS Trustís plans to create an 18-home development on the site of hospital buildings in Southall have been approved.

The trust sought permission to demolish two buildings - the Southall-Norwood Hospital and the Penny Sangam Unit - on a site at the junction of The Green and Osterley Park Road, and replace them with two new clusters of homes.

Under the proposals, which were supported by Ealing Council’s planning committee this week, the buildings will be replaced by a four-storey block of 12 apartments, and a separate block containing six three-storey townhouses.

Recommending the scheme for approval, Ealing Council planning officers said in a report that the homes fully accorded with London Plan standards, and that the development was considered to be appropriate for the town-centre location.

“The loss of the community facility is considered to be justified given the marketing of the site carried out and the lack of identified need of the facility for community purposes,” they said.

“Whilst no affordable housing provision is proposed, this is considered to be justified in the light of the submitted viability appraisal.”
