An Ealing-based cycle-hire scheme for folding bikes has seen a surge in membership.

The borough said a the number of people signed up to the programme had risen by almost 50 per cent in recent weeks.

It said 141 people were now taking part in the scheme, which allows Brompton folding bikes to be hired from the Brompton Dock at Ealing Broadway cycle hub on Haven Green.

Council leader Julian Bell said members had the flexibility to choose when they cycled, and could also take advantage of the unrestricted Tube access given to folding bikes.

“We want residents of all ages to see cycling as an attractive and safe option,” he said.

To use one of the 20 Brompton bikes available to hire at the cycle hub, residents must first register online for a membership package, at a cost of up to £45 a year. Then they can send a text message to the scheme to get a release code for one of the bikes from the hub.

Daily rental prices range from £2.50 for frequent users to £5 for leisure users.
